Testimony of season two as given by Samuel Ochieng of Dandora Kinyago Secondary School

No better words could summarize the story of Samwel Ochieng who is now an alumnus of Kinyago Dandora School in Dandora. As a result of him and other students participating in the Bible Trivia Show season one and two, their Bible reading culture tremendously improved which led to an amazing performance in the Christian Religious Education (CRE) subject in the years 2010 and 2011.

Samwel who participated in the season one of the Bible Trivia show emerged top student in 2011 Kenya Certificate in Secondary Education examination scoring grade B+ as well as emerging the best overall student in Njiru District.

Believe it or not, Samwel is naturally a soft spoken person who likes to keep to himself. However, through the interactions he had with other students in the Bible Trivia show, it emerged that he is a brilliant team member who could be relied on by his fellow team members. He would tackle what would appear to be the most challenging questions, placing his team on the lead.

Speaking to the Bible People team, David’s father Mr. Ochieng could not hold back his joy but express his gratitude to the Bible Society of Kenya for coming up with the idea since it has opened amazing doors for his son. As a result of David being the top student in Njiru District, he got a full Education scholarship with Equity Bank for his University Education in a University of his choice in the world.

Mr. Ochieng adds that the Bible Trivia show is a programme that is changing the lives of youth in Kenya both spiritually and academically and that is what our society needs so as to develop leaders for the future. He reiterates that BSK is undertaking a noble task of availing scriptures to people which is the source of all wisdom.

BSK are very grateful to NTV, a local television station for airing the 13 episodes of the national shows at no cost from January to end of March 2012.

New FCBH centers Launched in Turkana

Food was distributed and FCBH class was launched in Turkana

Bible Society of Kenya launched two Faith Comes by Hearing programs in Kakuma Refugee camp and Lodwar town on March 3rd 2012. More than 180 pastors from different denominations came from as far as Kalokol, Lokichar, Lokichoggio, and Nadapal for the launch. The Kakuma refugee camp hosts more than 90,000 refugees drawn from Democratic Republic of Congo, Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi and Somalia.

There was joy and excitement from the pastors who attended the launch that was facilitated by Rev. Dedan Kamau. The pastors were a small fraction of the United Refugee Churches Fellowship whose chairman is Pastor David Bwayo, a Ugandan, of International Pentecostal Holiness Church. Rev. Kamau shared the Word of God from Matthew Chapter 4 where he emphasized on the importance of the word of God.

After talking about Bible work, an FCBH demonstration was held where the pastors listened to the book of John 4 about the Samaritan woman. The discussion was very fruitful as each pastor jostled for an opportunity to express their view in English, Kiswahili or French. ‘This is one of the best Bible study experiences I have had for a very long time. It gives someone an opportunity to express his view and also to ask any question’, remarked Rev. Pierre Materanya of Assembly de Dieu du Congo through an interpreter.

Additionally 135 Turkana Bibles and 105 proclaimers were distributed in the two centers. It is our desire that through these initiatives the word of God will be known and applied in the lives of the people in the Turkana community.

41st National Annual General Meeting 2012

Bible Society of Kenya held its 41st National Annual General meeting on April 24, 2012 at All Saints Cathedral Church. It was indeed an honor for BSK to reconnect with its members after a successful year 2011 that saw the Society grow in terms of scripture distribution and increased public awareness of Bible work.

This event was graced by BSK Board members, members and staff from all over the country. It was certainly a great time to share and celebrate the successes of the Society for the last one year.

The Chief Guest speaker, Fr. Charles Odira in his message emphasized on the need of Christians being ambassadors of peace. He gave an illustration of a great philosopher who once said “God does not exist and if He does exist, then he is dead”. Sometimes, even Kenyans ask does God exist? especially during the post election violence experience. It is possible for people to ask why God does not intervene. The truth is that sometimes it’s easy to lose our faith due to experiences but when we know God we experience peace. This message was a reminder that our peace is found in God and not from other places.

He further added that the blood of Jesus Christ should be our unifying factor. As BSK we have a big role and mandate to bring the unity in diversity in Kenya by encouraging people and churches to see the unity in diversity that exists in our country.

On normal business, the Chairman informed members on BSK’s achievements and challenges as well as explained to the members the constitutional requirement of BSK Trustees. He mentioned the current trustees who are; Archbishop Njenga, Bishop William Tuimising, Dr. James J. Mageria, Mrs. Norah Musundi and Rev Ambrose Nyangao. Members were further informed that two of the trustees had reached their retirement age of 80 years. A committee was elected by the Board of Governors to foresee the process of replacing these two members. The committee then recommended appointment of Mrs. Patricia Wasao and Ms Lynette Walters as the new trustees. Both of them were given a chance to say something about themselves.

It is during this event that BSK employees were awarded for their untiring contribution to the Society. The long service awards were given to staff who had served between five years and 20 years. The staff include; Dickson Malenya, Edward Tuti, Stephen Kimani, Dalmas Oleko, Charles Wakhaya , Anne Gichuru, Benter Abonyo Owiyo, James Kathuraku, Peterson Wang’ang’a , Edward Murimi Gitau,  Rev. Dedan Kamau, Lilian Ogutu, Fr. Charles Kipkorir Kiruy, Rev. Musa Kipkorir Maina.

Mr. David Hammond, the Africa Area Secretary for the United Bible Society (UBS) was also present at the event. He addressed the members and appreciated their contribution the work of BSK.

The AGM concluded by BSK awarding all the members present with a branded BSK t-shirt. We appreciate you all for being part of transforming people’s lives.

It is a Prayer Breakfast for the UBS Africa Area and the Bible Society of Kenya!

The staff of the United Bible Societies Africa Area Office and the Bible Society of Kenya joined hands in prayers at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi. The morning prayers started at 7am through 10am in one of the Chapel in the Cathedral precincts – in observance of the May 9th UBS Day of Prayer! Invited church leaders and Christians alike too turned up. Those who spoke include the BSK Board Chairman, Mr. Isaac Litali, Mr. Thomas Tharao, BSK’s Operations Manager and Mr. David Hammond, the UBS Africa’s Area Secretary.
