BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Bible Society of Kenya held a successful National Annual General Meeting on March 30th, 2019 at Agape Church in Madaraka.

The event was graced by members from different branches including; Machakos, Bungoma, Kericho, Nairobi, Kakamega, Kisumu, Meru and Nyeri who turned up in large numbers to attend the event.

The National Annual General Meeting is an annual forum for BSK registered members where they come to interact, receive reports of performance for the previous year, elect new Board members and get projections on the upcoming plans for the year.

The guest speaker for the day was Bishop Henry Kathii, the immediate former General Secretary of the Bible Society of Kenya. He spoke on this year’s theme, “Unity of Purpose” from John 17:23 (ESV), I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.

He echoed the words of John 13:35, “…by this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another.” He noted that for us to spread the message of Jesus Christ, we need to be united as one. He added that we should make use of every opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ. He emphasized that we are living in times when people are very consumed with technology and social media as opposed to reading God’s word. He challenged the gathering to spend more time reading the Bible as we cannot have fellowship with each other if we do not have fellowship with God. He reiterated that we should be ready to work with each other because each person contributes something towards building the Kingdom of God.

New board members were elected to join the dynamic team that steers the mission of the Society to greater heights. Our desire is that as the ministry of BSK grows and more Christians join the lively team of members, they will collectively impact the community positively through God’s word.

Additionally, the Society set apart a display area to showcase its programmes to the members. This enabled them to have an in-depth understanding of the Society’s programmes and it was very much appreciated by the recipients.

The outgoing Board Chairman Prof. Mumo Kisau lauded all the members for their immense contribution to the success of the Bible Society of work. He noted that each member is an ambassador of BSK wherever they are hence they are highly valued. He encouraged them to continue participating in BSK activities and to recruit more members so that the family of BSK can continue to grow and influence the generations to come.

Prof. Kisau also welcomed the new Board leadership comprising Dr.Timothy Kiruhi, Mrs. Carolyne Gathuru, and Mr. Joel Enane as Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and Treasurer respectively. He also thanked the outgoing Board members for their service to the Society.

The General Secretary Mrs. Elizabeth Muriuki appreciated all members, Board, and staff for their contribution to the growth of the Society and bringing a positive impact to people’s lives through the spreading of God’s Word.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
