BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Hope for the hurting

Written by Joy Balusi

February 17, 2022

Mental health is a topic that is common in most conversations and stories that we are part of. It is said that one is not entirely healthy until their mental state is well.

Bible Society of Kenya conducts the trauma healing programme to help people regain hope in life through the word of God as well as take them through a healing journey.

On February 16th, 2022, the Bible Society of Kenya facilitated a Trauma Healing training for community leaders in Mathare at the Mathare Outreach Community Church. The participants were equipped with knowledge and skills to help them and other people in their communities who are traumatized to find hope from God’s word and begin their healing journey.

Some of the participants we interviewed testified that the training had helped them deal with challenges in life. This training was also conducted in other regions including Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Bondo Diocese, PCEA Nderi-Kiambu, Deliverance Church Eastleigh, and Kiambere pastors.

Ruth Mbiku, a young lady shared her experience on how she was traumatized after painfully going through surgery twice the same day. Apart from that, the fear of death kept looming around her. She went to the surgery room at 9:00 am and came out at 7:30 pm. Ruth is a youth leader in her church, having interacted with many young people, she gathered that most of them have no people to share their sufferings with. That’s why they turn to other outlets that probably lead to their destruction. This training was an eye-opener for her as she learned that she could form a healing group that will be a safe place for young people to share.

The climax of the training was awarding of certificates to the graduands after successful completion of the five-day training. Mrs. Elizabeth Muriuki, the General Secretary of the Bible Society of Kenya presided over the ceremony.

These trainings enabled us to reach over 150 people and we are grateful that many people are receiving hope from God’s word.
