We thank God for a successful five day teacher’s refresher training workshop that was held for five days from 18th-22nd April 2022 for the Literacy for Women in Africa program teachers.
The 40 teachers were trained on phonetic awareness through recognizing sounds and syllables, reading and writing fluency, comprehension components which form a big part of the learners’ primer which is a standard mother tongue-based curriculum used to teach adult learners in the marginalized areas of Turkana and its environs, who are set to begin classes in May 2022.
The five-day intensive training was done in partnership with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) consultant who develop the Turkana learning materials as well as conducted the teachers’ training.
The County Adult and Continuing Education Officer (CACEO) in Turkana County attended the training and addressed policy issues regarding the new adult education curriculum, basic literacy programs, proficiency tests for assessment of adult learners, and post-literacy education that transitions basic mother tongue-based learning to the formal education program.
The training was also attended by partners from Bright Hope international who brought in three teachers who will reach out to illiterate lead farmers in an area where they are practicing agricultural activities. This will be a major boost to the BSK additional classes and reaching out to more people with the program.
522 learners have been enrolled in this year’s cohort 2022 adult literacy classes in readiness for the launch of the 20 classes on May 4th, 2022. The teachers were awarded certificates and commissioned to start the program.
We thank our donors and partners for enabling learners in Turkana County to acquire education as this will not only improve their standards of living but enable them to read the Bible in their language.
