BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Beneficiaries of talking Bibles

We thank God for a successful Faith Comes by Hearing monitoring visit in West Pokot County from 21st April 2022 to 25th April 2022.

West Pokot is the 24th among the 47 counties in Kenya. It borders Turkana County to the North, Baringo County to the East, Elgeyo Marakwet and Transzoia to the South and Uganda to the West. Some of the areas visited include: Chepareria and Korellach villages in South Pokot constituency and Kanaroyon, Kiwawa and Logiroi in North Pokot, Kacheliba constituency.

We had fruitful engagements with members of the Pokot community who were hungry to receive God’s Word. Most of the populace are illiterate and semi-illiterate thus Audio-visual bibles come in handy in this part of Kenya.

The testimonies gathered were proof of God’s transforming word. We further showed the Jesus film and there was so much excitement from the community members who have never watched this film in the Pokot language.

“I have never been to school but somehow God has enabled me to read the Bible, though with difficulties. I am so excited to receive a Pokot proclaimer. I will use it in the Church I serve and in small groups.” Pastor Titus, Logiroi village.

“I have learned to take my burdens to the Lord through Pokoot Talking Bible.” Cynthia Woyangole, Kiwawa village.

“I was an alcoholic, but God delivered and healed me through listening to His word.” Women call me Bishop because she have mastered the word” Elizabeth

Once we were in a group meeting and Matthew 7 was playing in the Pokoot Taking Bible. I had stress for school fees but when I heard I can pray to God what I desire and He will give me, I got encouraged. God literally came through for me because someone paid for my school fees.” Jael Chelimo, ACCK, Koghwapeto.

“Since I started listening to the Pokot Talking Bible, I have become the salt of my family. God has helped me be a peaceful husband and a father. We are more united than before the audio Bible came into picture.” Joshua Long’alengura, Konaroyon village.

“I have grown closer to God since I started listening to Pokot Proclaimer with my family and a group of persons with disability. My faith has been built so much. When my eyes can no longer read the Bible, I have the privilege of listening and develop my walk with God. My children are also able to perform better in C.R.E because of constantly listening to the Word. I am grateful.” Andrew Akoule, Chepareria Village.
