BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Light shines among the Maasai community

Written by Joy Balusi

When a harvest is abundant, there is an unspeakable joy to a Sower.

The labor of toiling in Shompole region, Kajiado County has yielded lasting fruits that can only be God’s doing. A team from BSK and To The Least Of These Organization witnessed this transformation during a monitoring and evaluation visit among the Maasai community in the area who are beneficiaries of the Faith Comes by Hearing and Jesus film programmes

Among the groups and individuals visited, we could hear and see God at work through the testimonies given as follows.

“This Word in the Maasai Talking Bible has been life to me. When I am going through challenges, I have been knowing that I am an overcomer. Previously I used to live in fear when I encounter a stumbling block in life but now, I have been transformed. Day and night, I enjoy listening to this Bible.” Esther, Olosain village.

“Most people in this place are illiterate. You give them a print Bible, it cannot help but an audio Bible, they can hear the Word and be changed in knowledge and behavior. People can memorize verses and know bible stories especially about the life of Jesus. That is a miracle!” Chief Daniel Kuya.

“I teach in Primary School and Sunday school. Having a Maasai talking Bible has been so instrumental. Reading out the Bible has previously made children and even adults sleep when am teaching but with the audio Bible, they are all alert. They are very keen to listen and even respond so well during discussion sessions. This can only be God.” Brother Jack

“The life of Jesus in the gospels amazes me. More is His power over everything. I have learnt I can depend on Him since He relates with everything I go through.” Naomi Sundeh, Faith Pentecostal Church.

The Maasai Jesus Film was shown in three areas with 130 people in attendance. In one place the whole village of about 30 adults confessed Jesus as Lord and Savior after hearing the gospel through the Maasai Jesus Film for the first time. Our prayer is that the seed planted through the visual Word fell into the good soil of their hearts and will grow to thirtyfold, sixty folds and hundred folds.

Our prayer for the Maasai Community is that as they hear God’s word through audio Bibles, there will be a revival in their hearts.
