BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Availing God’s word where it is needed most

Written by Joy Balusi

November 20, 2020

This Word of God will provide and direct on all the morals l need to practice in this life.” Isaac Loshipae, Class 7-PCEA Namelok Boys Centre.

In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands his disciples, “Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples.” And one way the Great Commission is carried out is by distributing God’s Word where it is needed most.

Through support from generous partners Netherlands Bible Society, the mission of the Bible Society of Kenya of making available the Holy Scriptures in affordable and innovative formats for holistic transformation of people’s lives is bearing fruit.

Children need Bibles as the knowledge of God’s Word helps them find direction in life and persevere through life’s challenges. On November 17th 2020, we distributed Bibles to children’s homes in Kajiado County. The Bible distribution exercise aimed at enabling the children to interact with the Word of God and grow in their spiritual and moral values.

We interviewed some of the students and most of them confessed that they had not owned Bibles before. The school managements greatly appreciated the gesture and gifts received.

Here are some of the testimonies as shared:

“I am forever grateful for this gift. Nobody has ever given me a Bible. Thank you.” Maria Tinkoine, Class 7, Mother Esther School and Rescue Centre.

“You do not have an idea what these Bibles mean to these children! It is the best gift ever! What a blessing to think of us! Both teaching and studying the word of God will be easier henceforth!” Hugh Clinton, Teacher- PCEA Namelok Boys Centre.

“Jeremiah 29:11 is my favorite verse. It encourages me that God has simply the best for me. I now look forward to memorizing other verses from this Bible.” Florence Seeto, Class 7, Mother Esther School and Rescue Centre.

“I will read this Bible and l believe God will help me understand and revise during classwork In My Christian Religious Studies subject.” Ann Wanjiru Form 3, Huruma Children Home.

“I am sure my faith will grow. This Bible will be an instrument for my Christian journey.” Mercy Kanini, Form 2, Shelter Children Home.

It is so refreshing to see every child with a Bible. This week I have been teaching about the Word of God! What a timely season! I bless the Lord.” Mama Zipporah Kamau, Founder, Huruma Children Home.

As we celebrate International Children’s Day, we appreciate that children are special gifts from God. We endeavor to avail God’s word to them so that they grow to be responsible and value-driven citizens who will make positive impact in the generations to come.
