BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Bible Societies Day of Prayer

Written by BSK

May 12, 2023

The Bible Society of Kenya (BSK) joined the United Bible Societies (UBS) fellowship today May 9th, 2023, to pray for Bible work.

The UBS Day of Prayer is held annually by Bible Societies to pray for Bible work globally on May 9th. The United Bible Societies is a Fellowship of Bible Societies working in more than 240 countries and territories to make the Bible available to everyone.

On this day Bible Societies join with churches, staff, members, and other stakeholders to pray for Bible ministry in their own country and the ministry of Bible Societies around the world.

BSK marked this prayer day with a Hybrid gathering with most joining virtually while BSK staff joined physically in Bible House. The gathering started early at 7.30 and attracted over 70 participants from across Kenya. The event was attended by several senior Church leaders from diverse denominations and regions of Kenya, members, staff, Council members, Trustees, and other friends of BSK who participated in praying for different aspects including Bible translation projects, and Bible advocacy programmes, prayer for Kenya and the Church, United Bible Societies and nations that are experiencing wars.

This comes at a time when Kenya is dealing with the devastating news of the rise of cults and occults that have led to the deaths of many people in the coastal region of Kenya. The Church has been put to the test with many questioning the voice of the Church while all this is happening. The gathering took time to pray for the issue and to declare in faith that the Church will continue to stand and speak powerfully against such vices that have led to the brainwashing of people and even death.

The Council Chairperson Prof. Mumo Kisau thanked all the participants for availing themselves to pray for Bible work. He also encouraged them to continue praying for the Country, the nations of the world, and the work of the Bible Societies.

Several messages of appreciation and goodwill were received after the meeting, some of the attendees requested to join the BSK family as members.
