BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

BSK Members Interaction Forum

Written by BSkenya

July 11, 2018

The Bible Society of Kenya continues to reach the grassroots through its branches which are located in different Counties around Kenya.

As a way of appreciating members, BSK held a members engagement forum that brought together

members from Nairobi and its environs. This event also brought together potential members who were encouraged to join BSK and be part of the noble work of availing Scriptures to all in languages they understand best.

Currently, BSK has nine branches including Machakos, Nyeri, Meru, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kericho, Kakamega, Kisumu and Nairobi. Over the years these branches have been involved in planning for successful events including Bible Eagles Club Fun Days, Good Samaritan workshops, Trauma healing programme, prayer breakfasts for leaders and the business community, Bible launches and membership recruitments.

The General Secretary Mrs. Elizabeth Muriuki appreciated all the guests for attending the forum noting that the Society is continuing to grow to greater heights because of the prayers, support and participation of the members. She noted that BSK is very intentional about placing a Bible in every hand, thus has introduced a USSD platform *288# that enables people to buy Bibles in installments then the Bible will be delivered to the person. She added that the platform allows one to register for membership, donation towards Bible Work and pay membership subscription. The potential members were encouraged to register for the service and begin the process of becoming members of BSK.

In the meeting, testimonies were shared from two former Board members and members of Nairobi branch Mr. Isaac Litali and Ms. Njeri Kangethe. These members shared their fond experiences having been BSK members for a long time. They encouraged the potential members and their family members so that they can appreciate the noble work Bible Society of Kenya is doing to transform people’s lives through Bible translation and other bible advocacy projects.

Members were also encouraged to continue recruiting more members so as to ensure vibrancy in the branches as well as increase involvement in BSK activities.

Another successful event was held in Kisumu with 130 members in attendance  from Western and Nyanza regions. We thank God for the successful engagement forums which also created networking opportunities for members.
