BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Consistency in reading the word

Written by Joy Balusi

February 13, 2024

How often do you read your Bible? Do you have an online Bible or a hard copy? The Bible is a library of books, written by people inspired by God. It consists of stories of people, true stories. It contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation and the happiness of believers.

I used to think the Bible was difficult to read until I came across Ephesians 1:17-18, where Paul prays that God gives us the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. This caught my attention for a moment, and I started praying for wisdom and revelation everything I read a passage in the Bible, even a verse repetitive times, I discover something new and fresh from it.

Job 32:8 says, “It is the Spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty that gives him understanding” Look, we don’t need to stress much on how we’ll understand the Bible, As long as we have His Spirit in us, that’s enough to make us understand the Bible.

How then can one build consistency in reading the Bible?

Nowadays we have online study sessions or journals and study guides that can help a believer in reading the Bible. It begins by starting to read it, and then building a continuous momentum. You can plan to set an alarm for a specific time to read the Bible daily until you create that habit. You can decide to read character by character, by the time you are done, you’ll have read most of the characters in the Bible and are moving on.

The Bible isn’t just a book, it’s a book containing food. Jeremiah 15:16 says, your words were found, and I ate them, and your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart. Reading the Bible consistently makes us spiritually nourished. Imagine having your favorite meal served when you need it, now that’s the Bible to us.

The Bible contains treasures about the kingdom of God. It is the glory of kings to search out a matter. Reading the Bible consistently unlocks the secrets in it and it’s our glory as kings and Queens to find glory unlocking the secrets. Keep reading your Bible.
