‘I have never had such a transformation in such a short time. Everyone is asking, what happened, who do I know? My simple answer is – ABLI happened, I know God! Thank you ABLI’ 2018 ABLI Fellow, Lawyer Joy Twiri.
In 2005, the late Steve Jobs was invited to speak to young Leaders at Stanford University. His clarion call was ‘Innovation distinguishes between a Leader and a Follower’. Inspired by Steve Jobs and Paul’s letter to the Romans in Chapter 12 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”. As the Bible Society of Kenya, we took the challenge of COVID-19 in our stride- our ABLI Youth Mentorship went virtual in 2020!
Since 2016, the Bible Society of Kenya has been involved with the African Biblical Leadership Initiative (ABLI) programme with our affinity being Youth Mentorship. In previous years, the training took the model of physical classes held in the Counties of Nairobi, Kisumu, and Nakuru.
In 2020, we took a leap of faith and began ABLI cohort classes online. We have used technology to reach more youth in the Counties by developing them as leaders of integrity embedded in the timeless Biblical values. Biblically centred topics of Self-awareness, Leadership skills, Public speaking, Personal branding, Good governance, Ethics, Entrepreneurship, and Wellness are being undertaken and this is crowned by Community Service.
Here are some amazing testimonies from the ABLI 2020 class
“Can you imagine someone telling you, ‘‘Hey, it’s okay to feel scared and fearful but, you have to be intentional in making things happen.’’That is what the ABLI sessions have done to me. They have challenged me to face everything and rise. The most enlightening session was the storytelling one. I learned that my story is unique, and no one has the power to change it. I should tell my story to impact.” Purity Mutethya, ABLI Fellow 2020.
“I joined ABLI with an expectation to grow spiritually and build a strong network of believers across the Country. I have understood many aspects of leadership and professionalism, emotional intelligence, using storytelling to influence people, and facing my fears.” Emmanuel Osano, ABLI presidential candidate 2020.
We pray that these youth shall inspire ethical leadership in their spheres of influence. When 2020 goes to bed, Kenya will have added 126 Young Leaders as ABLI Fellows spurred to act as change agents in their communities.
