BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

A teacher keenly looking through the PPI material

Children are a gift and a responsibility of the guardians, parents, teachers, church, and society at large. God expects all these stakeholders to play a role in raising a godly generation that results in fruit-bearing lives reflecting the image of God in their lives.

I will open my mouth, in a parable. I will utter dark sayings from of old, things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell the coming generation, the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. Psalm 78:2-4

Bible Society of Kenya held a training for children’s workers in Nakuru County at Deliverance Church Ndege on 14th August 2021. A total of 45 Sunday School teachers from over 15 denominations attended.

The Children workers were reminded of Jesus’s principles regarding teaching children so that they too can get into the kingdom of God. Some of these fundamentals included converting, teaching humility, receiving them, and being careful not to mislead them. (Matthew 18:1-6)

Participants were also taught on God’s heart for the children, preparing for a lesson, attributes of a Sunday school teacher, and serving children of different ages.

During Pastoral Programme for Instruction (PP1), a children’s programme is implemented by the Bible Society of Kenya, participants were taught to use Bible stories to share God’s word with children in school, Sunday schools, and in their neighborhoods.

Mrs. Anne Mwangi, Bible Advocacy and Scripture Use Manager urged the teachers to engage children in their teaching as well as in prayer so that they can grasp and remember truths quickly. “It is always prudent to engage children especially in skits and dramatizing of the Truth you want to deliver. This way, they will never forget that lesson and they will keep telling it out as a story to their peers.”

The teachers’ representative, Pastor Obiero appreciated BSK for reaching out to children’s workers and children, especially at a formative age. We pray that through reaching such workers, the children will be snatched from the jaws of the enemy and experience the light of God at an early age.
