BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Eternity Through Christ

Written by BSkenya

In Traditional African Societies, a lineage continued through the naming system. It was believed that the life of an individual would be continued through their children. If they did not have any children, sadly, it meant that they would be forgotten. As such, many sought to have many children. It was a sure sign of life existing even after death, through your generations.

In the Bible, we see such scenarios as well. However, one scenario stands out throughout the Scripture. Life in Christ Jesus. See, “For God so loved the world, that He GAVE His own son, that whoever believes in Him shall not die, But have Everlasting Life.” (John 3:16). It is such a common verse. I guess everyone knows it but the truths in it are more than a million words of encouragement. Jesus gave up His life for us to live. We did not ask for it, neither did we deserve but still he chose us. He chose our living over His. He has provided a way for us to live eternally.

During such a time of crisis, it would be necessary to reflect on this selfless giving. Paul wrote to the young Timothy that he should reflect on the teachings of the Lord for they would give him insight into what he should do. Let us take time to reflect on the love God gave us through his son Jesus Christ. We can only accept the gift because it costs only a leap of faith.

John writes that, Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life (1 John 5:12). Like the traditional African societies, a child meant continued generation. The thing is, life in Christ Jesus does not stop. It is ever-flowing like a river. Springs of life. Do you have the Son? Allow not this season to pass without starting a relationship with Jesus Christ.

We can never face life without Him. We are so limited in our strength. However, in Christ Jesus we have peace with God, we are made right. Through Jesus Christ, we are continually receiving grace for every day. When we have Jesus, we have the boldness to approach God without condemnation (Romans 5:1-11). However, it is only in the boundaries of a relationship that we can encounter God and experience such benefits.

Are you trying to make it on your own? Are you tired of relying on your strength? Have you considered having a personal relationship with Christ? It is time. Make the decision now. Amidst the crisis, you can have the cross cover you. Life in Jesus is eternal!
