BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Finally! A Complete Audio Bible for the Turkana and Maasai Communities

Written by BSkenya

November 20, 2019

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We thank God that the Turkana and Maa communities finally have a complete audio Bible, thanks to a partnership between the Bible Society of Kenya and Davar international. The audio Bibles were launched in very colorful celebrations at Christian Resource Centre Kajiado and AIC Milimani, Lodwar town respectively.

The audio gadget that comprises of both the Old and New Testament was given to learners in various centres where the society has been running literacy classes as well as church leaders where the gadgets would be used in group Bible study.

To encourage the use of the Bible by the county assembly, an audio Bible was availed to the office of the speaker of the county assembly of Turkana. Mr. Onesmus received the Bible on behalf of Hon. Ekitela Lokaale, who was out of office on official duty. Mr. Patrick Losike, the County Executive in charge of Education in Turkana county also received an audio Bible. Mr. Losike expressed his gratitude to the Society for its efforts in curbing illiteracy in the County.

Kajiado County Speaker Hon. Johnson Osoi also received an audio Bible in Maasai language. The Speaker expressed his joy as this team had come to launch the first full Maasai audio Bibles. Hon. Osoi noted that the County Government of Kajiado is committed to the course of spreading the word of God and will do all that is necessary to see it’s fruition.

The audio Bible will be very instrumental in encouraging learning, understanding, fellowship, and studying of God’s word in the region where literacy levels are still relatively low. The Pastors pledged to make good use of the audio Scriptures in their congregations.

Bishop Joshua Ntitika, one of the pastors who recorded the Bible in Maasai language, thanked the two organizations for the good work they are doing. He said that literacy in the Maasai community is 48% and has become a challenge when it comes to reading the Bible which helps in enhancing the Christian values.

Mr. Mark Perkins who presented the audio Bibles stated that God’s word is powerful not only when we read but also heard. He reiterated that Davar International’s prayer is to avail audio Bibles to many people so that they would be drawn closer to God.

The General Secretary of the Bible Society of Kenya Mrs. Elizabeth Muriuki promised the communities that the adult literacy classes will be a priority to the Society. She added that the untrained leaders should come up with an adult curriculum syllabus for better guidance in planning.
