Learners at Kakuma narrating a poem in Ngaturkana during the event

Bible Society of Kenya commemorated the International Literacy Day celebrations in Kakuma, Turkana County on September 8th, 2022.

International Literacy Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness and concern for literacy problems existing within our local communities and how to improve them. This year’s theme was ”Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces.”

The event brought together various stakeholders who are involved in literacy work. The Deputy County Commissioner Turkana West Sub-County Mr. Alexander Mativo graced the occasion and thanked BSK for the noble work she is doing in helping the community through the literacy program. A total of 2,442 learners have gone through this program with 20 established learning centers.

BSK current learners from Kakuma got a chance to narrate a poem in Ngaturkana language on the importance of literacy. Eight post-literacy learners from the BSK class in Kakuma were awarded stationery to use as they transition to the government proficiency test program that would elevate them to sit for the KCPE and KCSE later.

We thank God for the lives that have been impacted through the literacy program in Turkana County and look forward to impacting more lives in the future.
