Lubukusu is mainly spoken in Bungoma County in Western Kenya. The Babukusu Christians have for a long time not had access to a good translation of the Scriptures. The Lulogooli and Luluyia Bibles were widely used in the Friends and Anglican Churches respectively. It is this need for their Scriptures that led to the request for their own translation of the Scriptures.
Dr. Kees De Blois who was both a UBS translation consultant and a missionary of the Reformed Church of East Africa played a very active part in assisting the Churches in the Bukusu area to get started. Kees was very knowledgeable in this language having obtained his Ph.D. on its phonology.
The Lubukusu translation was started in 1976 with a team of native translators including Jonathan Barasa, William Welime, and John Masete. The New Testament in Lubukusu was published by the Bible Society of Kenya in 1992 and launched at the Reformed Church of East Africa in March 1993. The Lubukusu Bible is interconfessional. The launch of the complete Bible in 2010 was well received by the community and has been a great tool for preaching and evangelism.
