BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Like Daniel, Can you stand to be counted?

At a time when any means will do, we can learn useful lessons from Daniel, whom God used greatly in public leadership.

Integrity Markers

EXCELLENCE: Now Daniel so distinguished himself by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. The authorities tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so (Daniel 6:3).

CHARACTER: They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. There was no basis for any charges against Daniel, unless it had something to do with the law of his God (Daniel 4:5).

CONSISTENCY: Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before…asking God for help (Daniel 6:10).

FAVOR: King Darius was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him from being thrown into the den of lions. May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you! The king spent the night without eating and without any entertainment and he could not sleep (Daniel 6:18).

REGARD: In Daniel 6:20-21 the king asked, ‘’Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?” Daniel Responded, ‘’My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. I was found innocent in his sight.” The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. He was highly unquestionable, and this put him in a dignified state. When you walk in integrity, you are honored by God and by men.

AVENGED: The men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children. The lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones. When you walk with honesty, the Lord avenges for you.

GLORIFY GOD: King Darius issued a decree that in every part of his kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. In Daniel 6:26-27, the king affirmed God, “For he is the living God and he endures forever; his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end. He rescues and he saves; he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.”

BLESSED: Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus. (Daniel 6:28)

May integrity mark all our lives, as we advocate for and promote the Bible cause.
