BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

NYERI CUSTOMERS FORUM

Written by BSkenya

November 7, 2016

Bible Society of Kenya had an opportunity to interact with its customers from Central Kenya region on July 1, 2016.

This forum brought together customers from over 20 bookshops who sell BSK Bibles in the region which covers Muranga, Kagio, Kutus, Kianyaga, Mwea, Keru-goya, Karatina, Othaya, Nyeri, Mweiga, Naromoru and Nanyuki.

The forum began with a welcome note from the Nyeri branch Chairman Mr. Francis Wahome. He thanked the bookshop owners for attending the forum and urged them to continue assisting BSK to spread the word of God widely through their outlets. He added that the Nyeri branch propagates BSK’s activities and mandate in the grassroots. He further encouraged them to join the BSK Nyeri branch as members so as to be part of BSK’s great mandate to share the Good News of Jesus Christ by translating, producing, distributing and encouraging use of the Holy Scriptures.
The General Secretary Mrs. Elizabeth Muriuki talked about BSK’s work and programmes and lauded the Nyeri branch for their active participation in BSK activities and events. She reiterated that Nyeri Branch had been on the forefront in contributing towards translating the Igikuria Bible project which is currently ongoing.

She noted that that the youth constitute a large population in Kenya and there’s need to bring them back to the Word of God, which will guide them in living responsibly in a world that is full of decaying moral standards. She thanked all the customers for honouring BSK’s invitation to the meeting. She urged the customers to be part of the greater mission of BSK by becoming members and supporting Bible work.
The customers were invited to share their views about the business environment, challenges faced and how to increase Bible sales in the region. The customers noted that they are glad to be part of the team that contributes to the furtherance of God’s kingdom as is articulated in our mission to make available and promote use of Scriptures for holistic transformation of people’s lives.

The booksellers, through the Kenya Bookshops Association National Chairman, Arthur Kamau, greatly appreciated the forum and pledged their support to the cause of Bible work. They appreciated the Society for the wide variety of Bibles available for their customers.

The meeting ended with a sumptuous meal served at White Rhino Hotel in Nyeri. We thank God for a successful event.
