BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Reaching out through Branches

Written by BSkenya

March 13, 2019

The Bible Society of Kenya continues to reach the Counties through her branches located in different regions in Kenya.

Bungoma branch members

All the nine branches held their Annual General Meetings where members gathered to receive reports on the previous year’s performance as well as plans for the future. This branches are; Nyeri, Kisumu, Kericho, Meru, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Machakos and Nairobi. During these AGM’s elections were done and new officials elected. These meetings precede the National Annual General Meeting which brings together all members to interact, know about the progress and future plans of the Society.

These branches have been actively involved in spreading the message about Bible Society of Kenya’s work at the grassroots as well as getting the community to participate in planned activities and events including; Bible Eagles Club fun day events, prayer breakfasts for leaders, Faith Comes by Hearing, African Biblical Leadership Initiative and recruitment of members.

The Society has reached out to the youth through the African Biblical Leadership Initiative which is a programme aimed at mentoring the youth in leadership and career development. The mentees ultimately become members of BSK which entitles them to participate in the various programmes conducted by the Society. This year the programme will be held in Kisumu, Nairobi and Nakuru Counties.

The Church Relations and Membership Recruitment Manager Rev. Canon William Matolo was present in all the Annual General Meetings. He lauded the branch members for being ambassadors of BSK mission and programmes to the Counties.  Members were encouraged to continue recruiting more members so as to ensure vibrancy in the branches as well as increase involvement in BSK activities. Rev. Matolo encouraged members to continue praying and supporting Bible work, visit many Churches and share with them what BSK is doing so that they can participate in the same.

The General Secretary Mrs. Elizabeth Muriuki appreciates BSK branches and looks forward to launching the Nakuru branch this year. This will help to expand the branch network. Thanks to all BSK members for tirelessly supporting Bible work and enabling the Society to grow to greater heights!
