BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

For the fourth time BSK held the Bible Eagles Club Fun Day event on Saturday November 5th 2016 at St. Mary’s Boys Primary School in Machakos County. Children from various primary schools and Churches attended the event from the County.
Machakos County, nicknamed ‘Macha,’ was the first capital city of Kenya and now, it is an administrative County in Kenya. Machakos has eight (8) constituencies including Machakos Town, Mavoko, Masinga, Yatta, Kangundo, Kathiani, Matungulu, and Mwala. Machakos Town is the administrative capital of the county. The beautiful hilly scenery of the County is perfect for tourist related activities such as camping, hiking safaris, ecotourism and cultural tourism, dance and music festivals among many more. A number of establishments ensure the region has a well-rounded hospitality industry.

Over 400 children attended the BEC fun filled event that comprised of dances, songs, behavior change communication classes and Scripture memory recital sessions. The children entertained themselves through dances and activities that earned them gifts.The sentiments below gathered from the children on the day proved how much the event was beneficial to them;

“I really enjoyed dancing, playing ball games and reading the Bible. I also learnt God’s word in a new way. I am looking forward to attend the event again next year” said Alvin Mwongela, 11years from St. Mary’s Boys Primary School.“The event was great, I enjoyed the memory verse recitals, singing new songs and meeting new friends.
I plan to bring my friends to next year’s event.” Melody Kimeu, Full Care Academy.

Teachers also expressed their gratitude to BSK for organizing this event for the fourth time, combining scripture engagement and enjoyable fun activities
“Bringing children to this event was worthwhile, the children have really enjoyed the games, food, met new friends and read the Bible, they are indeed very happy.” Deborah Ndinda says teacher from PCEA Siloam.
“I enjoyed teaching children the Word of God today. I appreciate Bible Society of Kenya for the work they are doing to reach out to children. The PPI materials were easily understandable by the children and also easy to teach with. I plan to bring more children next year so that they may learn Scriptures and apply it in their lives.” Kenneth Mwangangi, AIC Bomani.
