Are you familiar with the Presbyterian Boys and Girls Brigade theme song? What about the boy’s logo? Both are a perfect picture of a sea anchor and how it operates. They are centered on standing strong and steadfast no matter the situations. They remind the brigadiers that they should never lose their only firm, true security. You should listen to the song. Below are some of the lyrics of the widely known hymn:
Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?
We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll.
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love!
In the storms of death, in the scourge of diseases, in strains of fear, will your anchor hold? What a good question in such a perilous time! You see, an anchor holds a ship together to prevent it from being wrecked when storms or strong waves come in the sea. For us, we are in the sea of life and we cannot prevent storms from coming because they are part of life. We, however, need stability so that we stand unshaken, unmoved, unswerving when hit my tough and rough situations, like now.
Hope is unto us as an anchor is to a boat or a ship. Our hope holds us firm. With hope, we can have a quiet heart and be at rest even when trouble comes around because we can fully rely on that hope. Where is this hope from? A glimpse at this Word, we get light into our hope:
This certain hope of being saved is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls, connecting us with God himself behind the sacred curtains of heaven – Hebrews 6:19
From the above scripture, God has given us something unchangeable; His promise. One commentator notes that once God had spoken in this way, there was no way that He can change His mind. God cannot tell a lie. All who turn to God can trust the hope that God’s promise gives hope for the future. This hope will keep us from any despair in life. Our hope reaches to the holy place where God can respond to our steadfastness.
We are anchored in Christ Jesus. He holds everything together (Colossians 1:17) and when we are rooted and built-in him, then, that is a secure, solid, strong unwavering anchor. Know this: an anchor may not be visible superficially, but deep in the seabed, it holds the ship unmoved. For us, we may not see Jesus physically, but we know He is there, deep in us, with us and for us.
Are you anchored unto the Lord so that you will not drift? May your heart be warmed and your faith strengthened at such a time as this.
