With the many choices that you are obligated to make in life, you would at least hope that when buying a Bible, it would be a simple pick and go exercise right? Sadly, that is not the case. Each Bible is tailored to fit the readers’ preferences.
For you to constantly read the Bible, you need one that you would enjoy reading considering the language used and the size of text among other things. The question lingering in your mind would be “So what is the right Bible for me?” Here is how to find it.
1.Version
You have heard about different versions of the Bible, this refers to how the Bible was translated from the original texts which were in Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic to English. There are versions which were translated word for word which are a bit more complex to read like the King James Version. If you are a reader who appreciates complexity, then this Bible is for you.
Other versions are translated to convey what was meant in the writings without necessarily translating every word like the Good News Version and others are paraphrased to make it simple for readers to understand the word like the Contemporary English Version. These two are for readers who prefer information communicated in a simplified manner.
2.Size of Print
This refers to the size of the text in the Bible. You have two options here. Large print and normal print. The large print Bible contains large size of text which is easier to read. This would be best for people with eyesight problems or just those who like their text large. Keep in mind that large text also means a large Bible. The normal print would be recommended for those who do not mind reading small size text.
3.Bible cover
Well, your Bible will require maintenance, which is why you must take keen note of the Bible cover you select. You need to choose one you can maintain.
You could pick the hardcover Bible which is hardcore and can withstand different storage styles but can still be damaged by sharp objects and liquids spilled on it. The vinyl cover on the other hand is best for the more careful reader since it is more susceptible to fold and tear. Both come at pocket friendly prices.
Other Bibles like the children’s Bibles have handles to allow them to carry the Bibles easily. Also available is the synthetic leather cover which has a leather-like feel and is durable. This is slightly more expensive than the ones mentioned above. The last one is leather which is the most durable option with a higher price compared to the rest.
Aside from the material of the cover, you also have the liberty to pick the colour that best fits your personality. If you are outgoing, you might love the bright colours and for the reserved people moderate colours are also available.
4. Language
Well, the language may seem obvious, but we have variations in this too. Kenya is a diverse Country with about 54 language groups including English and Kiswahili. English and Kiswahili languages are spoken mostly by the urban majority.
The Bible is available in both languages. You could pick and English Bible or a vernacular Bible depending on the language you are more comfortable with. Choosing the local language Bible depends on the local language you speak. There are varieties of vernacular Bibles that you can chose from; Borana, Dholuo, Ekegusii, Gikuyu, Kalenjin,Kiembu Kimbeere, Kigiryama, Kikamba, Kimeru, Logooli, Lubukusu, Lubukusu, Lutirichi-Lwisukha-Lwidakho, Lunyore, Maasai, Nandi, Oluluyia, Pokot, Swahili, Somali, Taita, Turkana, Lusamia and Kuria Bible. Our current Bible translation projects are – Mwimbi Muthambi, Banyala and Gikuyu Study Bible.
So, if you had no idea that there was a Bible translated to your language, now you know. Feel free to get a copy and feel at home with the scriptures.
