Life: The Divine Breath

We often ask, “What is life?” during the extremes of our existence—either when we are standing on a mountaintop of joy or walking through a valley of deep confusion.

Is life merely a biological sequence of birth, growth, and decay? Or is it something more profound? The Bible reveals the meaning of life. If you are searching for a sense of purpose, the answers are woven throughout the Word of God.

1. Life is a Gift
The Bible highlights that life is not an accident of chemistry; it is an intentional act of God. We are the only part of creation that received the “breath of life” directly from the Creator.
Genesis 2:7: “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”
Our value isn’t found in what we produce or how much we own, but in whose image we carry. We are God’s masterpiece, not a mistake.

2. Life is a Person, Not Just a Concept
When we ask, “What is life?”, we are usually looking for a formula. However, Jesus did not just come to teach us how to live; He is the very source of life itself.
John 14:6: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'”
Finding life begins with a relationship with the One who designed it.

3. Life is Meant to be Abundant
Many people survive, but few truly live. The Bible makes a distinction between existing and “Abundant Life.” This doesn’t necessarily mean a life of luxury, but a life overflowing with peace, purpose, and joy that isn’t dependent on circumstances.
John 10:10: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.”

4. Life is a Preparation for Eternity
The Bible teaches that our physical life is like a “mist” or a “vapour” (James 4:14)—it is brief and fleeting. However, this life is the doorway to something permanent. The “answer” to life is that it doesn’t end at the grave.
1 John 5:11: “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

Do you feel like life is a puzzle with missing pieces? The Bible invites you to look toward the Creator. The answer to “What is life?” is found when we stop searching for a what and start seeking the Who. When we align our lives with God’s Word, the “breath of life” becomes more than a biological fact—it becomes a daily experience of grace and purpose.
