The question of why a loving God allows suffering has perplexed humanity for centuries.
It’s a deeply personal and often agonizing inquiry, particularly when we or those we love are enduring hardship. The Bible, however, does not shy away from this reality. Instead, it offers profound insights that challenge our limited understanding and invite us into a deeper trust in God’s ultimate plan.
1. God heals the broken-hearted
He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds, Psalm 147:3(ESV). While suffering is undeniably painful, Scripture consistently affirms God’s unwavering love, even in the midst of trials. This verse assures us that suffering, no matter how severe, cannot diminish God’s perfect and eternal love for His children.
2. Suffering refines us
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. James 1:2-3 (ESV). This does not suggest that God delights in our pain, but rather that He can redeem even the most difficult circumstances to refine us, strengthen our faith, and draw us closer to Him.
3. God understands our pain
I came that they may have life and have it abundantly, John 10:10b (ESV).
Christianity points to the cross of Jesus Christ as the supreme answer to the problem of suffering. God does not remain distant from our pain; instead, He sent His son Jesus to the world so that we may have abundant life.
While we may not always comprehend the specific reasons for our present suffering, we can rest in the certainty of God’s perfect love, His redemptive purposes, and the glorious future where He will wipe away all our tears.
