The Society is conducting literacy monitoring in Lodwar during the last week of July 2026. The 20 classes have enrolled 575 learners: 78% women and 22% men.

Despite intense heat, climate challenges, and strong cultural influences, learners remain committed and eager to learn.

Testimonies

Nanjala, who arrived in Turkana in 2010. As a non-local, she joined BSK Turkana classes to learn the Turkana language. Although communication has been challenging because of the language barrier, she is determined to master Turkana and join the adult education teaching fraternity in the future. She is also pursuing a formal adult education programme in grade three.

Njeri Njoroge is also interested in learning the Turkana language. Born to Kikuyu and Turkana parents, she wants to start a business in Lodwar and learn how to communicate and transact effectively in the town’s cosmopolitan setting.

Wilson Kiapa, a Grade 3 learner, says the audio Bible has helped learners grow in their faith. Some joined the class before knowing Christ, but through listening to God’s Word in the Turkana language, they have begun to experience Him. “Thank you, BSK, for giving us this Word. It has helped us know God better.”

Overall, the literacy programme is empowering learners in Lodwar with language skills, confidence, and spiritual growth despite challenging conditions.
