Empowering Learners in Turkana with Literacy Skills

The Society successfully launched 40 literacy classes in May, which are progressing well, with a total of 1,262 learners. The teachers have shared positive reports on the learners who have continued to acquire reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
Post-literacy classes, for 2024 alumni and other learners, have also shown great improvement in numeracy, English, and Kiswahili. These learners are set to graduate in December 2025. As we aim to improve the lives of the participants and their families, BSK has integrated other programs, including an audio visual program, trauma healing, among others. The community is getting deeper in the Word of God as they listen to the word as part of their class routine. The teachers are also showing Jesus Films in the community.
“I joined the class in 2024, at Kamunya AEP (Kakuma). I never knew anything since I have never been into a school setting. This class opened my eyes, and I can say, the value of the literacy program, especially in mother-tongue has been exciting. It is the identification of vowels and sounds that motivated me to even know how to spell my name. Am excited that I have now moved to the post-literacy level to learn more in English, Kiswahili, and Maths. People call me ‘Engineer’, since I have the skill of doing motorbike repairs just by observing what other people do in garages. I thank God for BSK and may God bless them. We hope that the classes will be expanded to reach out to more villages, especially in this area of Kamunya AEP, Longoi Lotuna.
