The International Day of Families is held every year on 15th May. This year’s theme is “families, inequalities and child wellbeing.”

The Bible presents the family as a divine institution created by God, emphasizing love, respect, and mutual care among members. It highlights marriage as a sacred union, defines children as a reward from God, and commands children to honour parents. The Bible also emphasizes unity, spiritual nurturing, and practical care for family members.

This year’s theme lines up directly with biblical values of justice, protection of children, and family as God’s design. Scripture highlights the importance of families living in unity and growing together in the knowledge of God.

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. Deuteronomy 6:6–7

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4

The righteous who walks in his integrity—blessed are his children after him!” Proverbs 20:7

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honour your father and mother’ (this is the first commandment with a promise), ‘that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land. Ephesians 6:1–3

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Colossians 3:20

Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. Proverbs 23:22

All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children. Isaiah 54:13

But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children. Psalm 103:17

May we remain committed to nurturing our families with godly wisdom and maintaining the unity necessary to strengthen the communities around us.
