The Society successfully commemorated the Day of the African Child (DAC) on June 19th 2026, at the ACK Riakanau Grounds in Mwea Sub-County.

This was a day dedicated to honouring African children and advocating for their fundamental rights.

This year’s event brought together various partners, including Compassion International, Lumos, the Mwea County Government, and the Bible Society of Kenya (BSK). Together, they played a key role in mentoring children, teaching them about good hygiene practices, encouraging them to say no to defilement, and to embrace self-care.

While the day was filled with lively music, presentations from children including dances, poems and child-led advocacy presentations highlighting the global theme of child protection and development, BSK brought a unique dimension by acting out the story of the woman at the well who was enlightened by Jesus about the living water.

Earlier in the week, the BSK team, engaged over 200 children in ten schools in the Mwea region, through the Young Samaritan programme to bring Scripture to life in a fun and practical way while helping the children to embrace good moral values, overcoming peer pressure, building self-awareness, spiritual resilience and reminding them of God’s love for them.

Mr. Thomas Tharao, Head of Business Development and Programmes at BSK, noted that BSK is at the forefront in ensuring that everyone has access to the Bible. He added that the children’s trauma healing programme aims at addressing children’s issues and empowering them with knowledge on how to handle trauma. He urged the children to report abuse cases so that the incidents can be acted upon. In addition, each child received a copy of the You are loved portion and bracelet from BSK, reminding them that they are loved and matter to God.

BSK also set up a display desk to engage with the audience on available programmes that the community can engage with God’s word. The Kikamba Bibles and Kiembu Kimbeere Bibles were offered at a discounted price.

To conserve the environment, a tree planting session was done which involved the children and all the stakeholders present. This exercise aimed at teaching children the importance of taking care of the environment.

Through the collaborative efforts of all the partners present and the local government, the 1,974 children who attended the event at ACK Riakanau grounds felt celebrated and were deeply enriched, carrying a message of hope in their hearts and the Word of God in their hands.
