Literacy for Women in Africa

BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.

BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Cultivating a Healthy Mind

In our fast-paced world, pursuing mental well-being can often feel difficult. Yet, amidst the chaos, the timeless wisdom of Scripture offers anchors of peace and guidance.

The Bible isn’t a substitute for professional mental health support, but it provides profound truths truths that can significantly contribute to inner strength and resilience to help us nurture our mental health. Here are some Scriptures to meditate on as we prioritize your mental health. 

1. Finding Peace in the Storm

When anxiety weighs heavily, the words of Philippians 4:6-7 offer a powerful antidote:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  

This passage is a gentle invitation to redirect our worries. Through prayer, expressing our needs and gratitude to God, we create space for a peace that surpasses our limited human comprehension to settle within us, safeguarding our hearts and minds.  

2. Finding Strength in Community

We are not meant to navigate life’s challenges alone. Scripture emphasises the importance of community and mutual support. Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us:

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”  

3. The Gift of Rest and Reflection:

In our driven society, we often neglect the vital need for rest and reflection. Even God, after creating the universe, rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2). Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray and connect with His Father (Luke 5:16).

Making time for stillness, whether through prayer, meditation on scripture, or simply quiet contemplation, allows our minds to rest, process emotions, and regain perspective. It is in these moments of quiet that we can often hear God’s gentle guidance and find renewed strength.

4. Embracing Forgiveness:

Holding onto resentment and bitterness can be incredibly damaging to our mental and emotional well-being. Scripture repeatedly calls us to forgive others, just as God has forgiven us (Ephesians 4:32):

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Forgiveness is not about condoning the actions of others, but rather releasing ourselves from the burden of anger and resentment, freeing our hearts and minds to heal.  

5. The Power of Positive Thinking

Our thoughts have a profound impact on our emotional state. Philippians 4:8 encourages us to cultivate a landscape of positivity within our minds.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”  

Remember, if you are struggling with your mental health, seeking professional help is a sign of strength and self-care. Scripture can be a powerful companion on your path to healing and wholeness
