BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Impact of Bible Distribution in Migori County

Written by BSK

March 12, 2025

Bible Society of Kenya (BSK) began a journey towards Migori County, Western Kenya in 2023 upon watching, hearing and seeing so many sad stories of the state of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) among the Kuria Community who reside at the border of Kenya and Tanzania.

BSK took it upon herself to partner with Churches in the area to identify regions where girls had been struck by female genital mutilation and upon engagements, few girls were taken through Trauma healing and later, a need for finding hope in the Bible arose.

It is upon this background that 63 schools were identified in 2023 and 2024 and 29, 293 girls and boys received Bibles, Bible portions, New Testaments and Hope materials.

What has happened since then?

From January 19th to 31st, 2025, the Bible Society of Kenya embarked on a Mission in Migori County once again, this time for the third year, visiting ten schools to follow up on their Bible distribution efforts.

This initiative aimed to assess the impact of our labour of love among students who had received Bibles in previous years. The schools selected for a visit ranged from visually impaired and hearing-impaired special schools, senior schools, primary schools and more importantly schools within the radius where FGM has been high over the years.

General Impact

BSK had conversations with teachers and parents and the blessing in hearing what God is doing in a slow but steady way was pure warmth to our ears.

One of the schools, Nyakehomo Primary School is near the hills where the cutting of the girls is done every 2 years but the revival in the area is one to behold.

The students who did not know the word of God had the most memory verses shared during our visit. Every student wanted to showcase how much they had learnt because of reading the Bible. The drama-based stories were the peak of the visit to this school. The students narrated stories in a creative witty way. The knowledge of God is being filled in this area as the waters cover the sea.

Children are the best ambassadors of God’s word. Telling as it is. The narrative of the Bible distribution sparked a big conversation in homes and Churches within and above the areas covered.

Imagine families being reunited, members of families receiving Jesus in their heartshope revived in families because of the obedience of children in spreading God’s kingdom not only in schools but their homes, consciously or unconsciously, the Kingdom of God is coming to the hearts of people, and they are having communion with God through Bible engagements.

Testimonies

The teachers expressed how much easier it has been to teach Christian religious education, which is a compulsory subject in most Kenyan Public schools. They also confirmed how much the Bibles mean to their students like in Biasimui Primary School where one teacher said, “The Bibles have been motivating the learners to come to school. We have been keeping them for them and using them when in school. It is like knowing there is a cup of tea waiting in school, they gladly want to come because Bibles are around.”

Morally, the parents interviewed were amazed at how much their children have changed, they take up responsibilities and are eager to make the right choices. Selina Simbi, a Parent at Kwibancha Senior School said “My girls have loved Jesus more and have the confidence to witness for Jesus something I have never seen before. During holidays, my neighbours come to our home to have fellowship since my girls have been bringing the Bibles home and we use them together. As a parent, I am so proud of my girls.”

Dolphine, Form 3, Taragai Secondary School, “Through the RSV Bible, Christianity in this school has gone a top-notch higher as we are engaging with scriptures more. The Christian Religious Education sessions are more exciting, and we look forward to them because we have reference material to use.”

Moses, 14 years old, Kwibancha Junior Secondary School, “I am now able to memorize so many verses in the Bible because I have a Bible to refer to. My best verse is Isaiah 60: which tells me to arise and shine for God’s glory has come.”

We are grateful for our partners, our donors, our colleagues, and our friends together with who are joining God in changing the world, One Child at a time! One family at a time!
