BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Nurturing a Bible Reading Culture

Written by BSK

February 11, 2025

In a world of uncertainty and chaos, the Bible stands as a beacon of light and guidance.

Its timeless truths offer wisdom and hope to those who seek it. Creating a Bible reading culture within our homes, communities, and churches is essential for nurturing spiritual growth, strengthening our faith, and building a deeper connection with God.

The Bible is not just a book; it is the living Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and designed to transform our lives. As we immerse ourselves in its teachings, we encounter God’s character, learn about His love and mercy, and discover how to live a life that pleases Him. The Bible provides practical guidance for daily living, challenges us to grow in our faith, and empowers us to overcome life’s challenges.

Reading the Bible alone is enriching, but engaging in group Bible studies and discussions can deepen our understanding and enrich our spiritual journey. Here are some practical tips to help create a consistent Bible-reading culture.

1. Set a regular reading schedule – Dedicate a specific time each day or week for Bible reading. Make it a non-negotiable part of your routine.

2.Choose a reading planThere are various Bible reading plans available online and in bookstores. Choose one that fits your schedule and interests.

3. Create a comfortable reading environment – Find a quiet place where you can focus and minimize distractions. Consider using a physical Bible or a digital app with helpful features like highlighting and note-taking.

4.Pray before and after readingAsk God to open your heart and mind to His Word, and to help you apply its teachings to your life. Hebrews 4:12 says “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

5. Journal your thoughts and insights – Write down your reflections, questions, and applications from your reading. This can help you deepen your understanding and retain what you’ve learned.

6. Incorporate Bible study into your community – Organize or participate in group Bible studies, prayer meetings, or other gatherings that foster a culture of Bible reading and discussion.

7. Lead by example – As parents, leaders, and mentors, set a positive example by consistently reading the Bible and sharing your faith with others.

Prayer

Lord, I ask for your help in cultivating a true desire within me for reading and studying your Word every single day. I know that it is through scripture that my soul is nourished and strengthened, and I long to experience that nourishment more deeply. Please guide me and inspire me to prioritize time with you and your Word, so that I may grow closer to you and live according to your will.
