The Society continues to conduct a literacy programme that equips learners in marginalized communities with literacy skills in their mother tongue.

From 20th – 24th April 2026, the Society conducted a five-day Turkana Teacher Refresher Training in Lodwar. The objective of the training was to refresh teachers on the Turkana Mother Tongue-Based Literacy Curriculum, introduce new thematic topics to enrich learning and improve community.

The training brought together 32 teachers from 20 BSK literacy centres and two teachers from Bright Hope International Turkana, who are preparing to start two literacy classes targeting illiterate farmers in the region.

The teachers were taken through key components of the literacy curriculum, including reading and writing skills, lesson delivery techniques and teaching vowels and consonants. The sessions allowed teachers to practice lessons, receive feedback, and strengthen their teaching confidence.

A new thematic area on livelihoods was introduced to complement literacy learning. The training emphasized alternative income-generating activities, including basket weaving, small-scale kitchen gardening using drought-resistant crops, charcoal-related value addition and small business development through group savings initiatives.

In addition, the teachers were trained on integrating the Faith Comes by Hearing programme into literacy classes to strengthen learners’ spiritual growth. The teachers were further introduced to Kobo Collect, a digital data collection tool that will ease reporting and enhance monitoring and evaluation.

We thank God for the opportunity to empower the Turkana community with knowledge that will help them have better lives.
