BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Branches Summit

The BSK branches summit was held on 14th February 2025 at the Bible House. The meeting was attended by officials from 12 branches.

Nairobi Branch Chairperson Mr. Fredrick Omia led devotions based on the BSK 2025 theme, Isaiah 41:13 (Finding me in Him, held by His righteous right hand, guided by His grace). The topic of the devotion was Managing Change.

Members were encouraged to trust and hold onto God through life seasons and challenges experienced in ministry in their respective spheres of influence. The message emphasized trusting in God’s ability to help them navigate these challenges, with Christ remaining their source of hope.

The General Secretary, Mrs. Elizabeth Muriuki, welcomed members to the meeting and introduced the Embu branch, the newest branch that was formed in 2024.

The officials gave updates on activities that took place in 2024 in their respective regions, the challenges faced and plans for the year 2025. It was encouraging to note the crucial role that the branches play in supporting BSK programmes in various parts of the Country and the desire to expand the Society’s work to the grassroots level.

Prof. Mumo Kisau, the Council Chairperson, encouraged members to be energized and support one another in fulfilling their work. He thanked the members for their ongoing efforts to raise the visibility of BSK in their respective regions, acknowledging that their work in the Lord is not in vain.

Branches AGMS

BSK branches held their Annual General Meetings (AGMs) as scheduled. Representatives from the head office attended the AGMs in the various branches.

During the AGMs, reports were shared on activities that branches were involved in, in 2024. They also shared plans and budgets for the year 2025. Some of the branches including Vihiga, Machakos, Embu, Kakamega, Nairobi, Kisii and Nakuru held elections which were successfully conducted and new committee members were elected.

The branches expressed enthusiasm and renewed zeal to serve and ensure that the mandate of BSK is actualized in their regions.

We pray for renewed strength as the members spur the Society’s work to greater heights in their respective regions.
