BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

Hope in Despair

In the aftermath of the world’s tragedies people endure wounds of the soul and spirit. Without intervention they can become trapped in cycles of hatred and mental suffering.

Our trauma healing programme continues to offer healing and comfort to people who have gone through traumatizing situations in life including; terrorism, natural disasters, domestic abuse, death, illness, imprisonment, financial challenges and many more.

Graduands from ACK Riruta Church receive certificates after completing the one week trauma healing training

The Society held a trauma healing training comprising of 36 participants at Riruta Parish in Kawangware. The participants were taken through the different topics in the trauma healing handbook; If God loves us why do we suffer? How can the wounds of our hearts be healed? what happens when someone is grieving? Helping someone who has been raped, domestic abuse, suicide, caring for a caregiver, taking your pain to the cross, how can we forgive others? And preparing for trouble.

After the training participants thanked Bible Society of Kenya for offering such a helpful course. Most of them confessed that they had begun receiving healing from their wounds and we are grateful to God because healing comes from Him.

A total of 31 participants graduated and are now empowered to spread the message of hope in their different spheres of influence. Additionally the Riruta Parish will be a trauma healing center for the Church members and immediate community, a place where people can go and access a trauma counsellor.

I am the first born in a family of three. I went through a difficult childhood struggling to attend school due to lack of school fees. I lost my mother at a tender age hence my aunts and uncles deserted me and did not support me in organizing my mother’s burial. I developed deep hatred towards my aunts. I ended up not grieving the loss of my mother because of the pressure to run and make sure that everything was smooth during the burial arrangements. After learning the topic on grieving and taking the pain to the Cross, I realized that I was carrying a heavy burden for so many years. I must say that I have experienced such relief and forgiveness and I am very grateful for the trauma healing sessions offered by the Bible Society of Kenya. Judy Wangari Kogi

I was attacked by thugs in June 2018 on my way home from work, I used to distribute cosmetic products. I later learnt that it was a set up by my colleague who confessed when I was taken to hospital. I have a scar at the back of my head where I was cut during the attack. I lost Ksh. 50,000.00 and my mobile phone. After the lesson on forgiveness I have forgiven my former colleague and I am free from that burden. Ephantus Ng’ang’a – Riruta Parish youth chairman
