Bible Translation is a noble and intricate endeavour, often spanning 10-15 years for a complete Bible and 5-6 years for the New Testament alone. Each verse costs approximately Ksh 1,200 (USD 10) to translate.

The Process

The journey begins with a request from a church. Churches identify the need for Scriptures in their language and approach the Bible Society of Kenya for assistance.

The Bible Society partners with local churches, recruiting translators from various denominations. The translation process is as follows:

1. Drafting: Translators draft the Bible, with one person assigned per book.
2. Team Revision: All translators collaboratively review each book to ensure joint ownership.
3. Community Review: Experts familiar with the language and culture conduct a community check.
4. Consultant Check: A translation consultant, skilled in Greek, Hebrew, linguistics, and theology, reviews the work.
5. Publishing – This stage includes the following;

• Manuscript Examination: Formal checks ensure the text adheres to writing standards, including punctuation, quotations, and consistent terminology.
• Typesetting: The text is formatted for printing.
• Proofreading: The text undergoes thorough checks for grammatical and spelling errors.
• Corrections: Necessary corrections are made post-proofreading.
• Proof Confirmation: Final proofs are confirmed.
• Production: Camera-ready copies are prepared for printing.

Launch and Impact

Once printed, the Bible Society of Kenya officially launches the Bible, enabling churches to share its message with their communities. The Society has translated the Bible into 23 local languages.
