The Pokot people, an indigenous group inhabiting the rugged terrain of West Pokot and Baringo Counties in Kenya, have a rich cultural heritage deeply intertwined with spiritual beliefs. Traditionally, the Pokot people revered several deities, including Tororot, Asis (sun), and flat (rain); the below is the abode of humans, animals, and plants.

However, the introduction of Christianity in the 20th century presented a new paradigm. The Bible Society of Kenya, recognizing the spiritual needs of the Pokot community, embarked on a monumental task: translating the Holy Scriptures into the Pökoot language.

The translation process began in 1975, a journey spanning over three decades. The dedication and tireless efforts of translators, consultants, reviewers and other stakeholders culminated in the launch of the Pokot New Testament in 1988.

On August 15, 2009, a historic milestone was achieved: the complete Pokot Bible was launched. This momentous event marked a significant step forward in the spiritual and cultural development of the Pokot people. The availability of the Bible in their native tongue has empowered them to deepen their faith, understand God’s word, and preserve their cultural identity.

The Pokot Bible is a gift that continues to enrich the lives of countless Pokot people, generation after generation.
