BSK has an adult literacy program dubbed literacy for women in Africa. This program mainly targets a group of women of child-bearing age (15 years and above) who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
Other persons targeted by the programme include men, young girls, and elderly women. This could also include women who have already had the opportunity to learn to read ‘second chance.’

Turkana County has low literacy levels of 20% considering that it has a population of 926,976 speakers of the language. Non-literates account for 741,580.

The Literacy for Women in Africa programme is currently being implemented in the County with 20 active adult literacy classes spread across Loima, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South sub-counties. The program has grown tremendously since 2018 when it began with 10 pilot classes. So far, 1920 learners have been trained with 65% of them being women.

The reason why the program majorly focuses on women is that in the marginalized communities women or girls are denied a chance to go to school, as priority is given to men. Women are seen as people who carry out house chores, bear children, go through practices e.g. female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages thus denying them a chance to access education or any form of schooling.

The uniqueness of this program is that it is a non-formal mother tongue-based education meant to impact adult learners with basic reading and writing skills. The main goal of the program is to enable the marginalized communities to read the Word of God in their heart language and be transformed by it.

BSK partners with the Church to implement this programme. The Churches provide venues that are used as classes, they identify passionate people who are trained as teachers, and they assist in monitoring. The Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education office has also come in handy in helping learners to transition to formal schooling to learn other subjects.

United Bible Societies Day of Prayer

Written by BSK

May 9, 2024

The Bible Society of Kenya joined the United Bible Societies (UBS) fellowship on May 9th, 2024, to pray for Bible work.

The UBS Day of Prayer is held annually by Bible Societies to pray for Bible work globally on May 9th. On this day, Bible Societies join with Churches, Council members, partners, staff, members, and other stakeholders to pray for Bible work in their own Country and other Countries worldwide.

BSK marked this prayer day with an online gathering while BSK staff joined physically in Bible House. The gathering started at 8 am and attracted 115 participants from across Kenya and beyond.

The meeting began with a word of encouragement from Rev. Canon William Matolo, who shared a word from Psalm 91:1-2. He reminded the gathering that despite the challenges we face as human beings, God remains our refuge and fortress, and we can always trust in Him to overcome on our behalf.

The General Secretary Mrs. Elizabeth Muriuki thanked all the participants for availing themselves to pray for Bible work. She encouraged them to pray and support BSK programmes so that they may have of positive impact on society. She further urged the participants to consider joining the BSK family as members so that we can continue to grow the work of God to greater heights.

The event was attended by several Church leaders from diverse denominations and regions of Kenya, who prayed for different aspects including Bible translation work and Programmes, funding of operations, BSK Council, Staff, Branch leadership, volunteers, programme partners, donors, customers and supplier relations, warring countries, Churches, Missionary organizations as they distribute and encourage the use of Scriptures.

This comes at a time when Kenya is dealing with floods which have affected various people in various ways. The gathering took time to pray for the issue and to declare in faith that God will have mercy on Kenya and that He will give wisdom to the Country’s leadership even as they make decisions concerning this issue and many other issues that the Country is grappling with.

The Council Treasurer Mr. Sam Abwoga thanked all who attended the prayer session. It was indeed a great moment of fellowship, and we thank God because He hears and answers our prayers.
